While I was in Norway I attended the Norwegian Basenji Specialty Show 11-12th June where they had a record entry of 80 - judged over 2 days by Basenji Specialist Mr Glen Dymock from the U.K. The show was held in a beautiful camping ground in Oslo and most of the exhibitors stayed on the grounds for the weekend so it was a really social weekend!
It was a shame the weather couldn't have been organised better for the show but as they say 'the show must go on'. The first day of the show & the previous day was pouring with heavy rain so Dag & Kurt came to the rescue by fashioning numerous white tarps into a ceiling that while looking like a circus tent gave us at least a chance to stay out of the worst of the downpour. We still had to try and avoid the tent ropes while showing but it absolutely saved the day!! Thankyou Dag & Kurt for all of your hard work!! The show has been nicknamed "Circus Basenji Specialty" because of the roof top set-up!
Jeanette of Doberguard Basenjis & Liv of Kingwanas Basenjis both needed a hand to show some of their dogs where they had muliiple entries in some of the classes so I was really excited to be able to handle 3 Basenjis and get my Basenji fix as I was really missing my dogs back home.
Kingwanas Flirting Figaro
First up were the males and a grand son of Pitsi's - Kingwanas Flirting Figaro made it to the final 4 dogs and ended up Best Dog 3 handled by his owner Vibeke who did a wonderful job for a novice!

Kingwanas Fairy Of Tails
First I handled an elegant granddaughter of our Pitsi - Kingwanas Fairy of Tails who came 2nd in Open Class with Excellent and a CK which means she was eligible to compete in the Best Bitch Competition.

Photo:K.Espeland
Then I was privleged to handle a beautiful daughter of Sunny's - “BIS Nor Ch Doberguard's Maya Masterpiece” who first of all was judged excellent with a CK and won the Champion Class and then went on to win Best Bitch and eventually after a long rain delay in which we were freezing and the rain did not ease up
Maya was eventually awarded BEST EXHIBIT IN SHOW!

BEST IN SHOW (Maya) and BEST OPPOSITE SEX (Emile)
Maya is sired by our own MBIS, MBISS Aust. Grand Champion Afrikenji Hot Sumaknight and is out of Nor Ch Matabichi Dee-Dee Dazzling Diamond.
The judge wrote in his critique “Outstanding feminine Bitch, very good fine wrinkle, typical long forearms. Clean bone, outstanding fine coat, pliant skin, excellent topline, outstanding tail, set & curl
very reachy hindquarters. The absolute embodiment of gazelle like grace.
A top class specimen, full of Quality, could stride out slightly more, very difficult to fault....”

Maya here with her happy breeder/owner Jeanette Strand

After the show was over on the 2nd day the presentations were made for the Top Basenji in Norway 2010 which also went to Doberguard's Maya Masterpiece !! Congratulations Jeanette & Maya & thankyou for presenting me with the trophy to keep which you can see here proudly hanging on my wall at home! I just fell in love with Maya, such a pretty and typey very sweet girl!
The next day was a complete contrast to the previous day, a nice warm sunny day.I had the choice of 6 mth old male littermates to handle (both sired by Sunny) red/white “Cairo” or black/white “Haki” who I was very impressed with & when I was handed his lead 15 minutes before showtime I was told that he had only been in 1 show before, so we did a quick training session together and he worked so well for me (and the sausages) & so he won his 6-9 mth dog class.

Haki with his owners Terrie Miller & Sissel Kristin, myself & the judge
He was also shown against the adults in the special classes and also won BEST HEAD AND BEST GAIT. I took him in for Best Gait & his owner Sissel ably handled him to Best Head. He has lovely sound, easy & effortless movement, true coming and going an excellent short shiny coat and a head to die for.

Me with SBOS Nor Ch Kingwanas Entertaining Story from Sunny's 1st litter in Norway.
Mille spent the night in my mobile van snuggled up as close as she could get to me under the doona. She is such a sweetheart that I totally fell in love with her. Mille was in the champion class and even though she was a bit too chubby she got an Excellent & was also placed in Best Ears. In fact all 4 placings in Best Ears were all kids of Sunny's from 2 different litters.
I had such a wonderful time and I got to meet so many wonderful people in person and many of Sunny's kids & grandkids and some of Pitsi's grandkids too so it was a real thrill!!!! Thankyou everyone for such a wonderful time and so many lovely memories. I really enjoyed the social BBQ in the evening of the first day which shows that the Norwegians know how to make specialties into a fun and a real social occasion partying into the wee small hours.

We had to say goodbye to our first Basenji Ch Tengku Zan Zurii our funny yodelling beautiful old boy Zurii last month. Its still hard to believe and I haven't been able to write about it until now. He would have been 14 years old next month. He was bred by Mr Mick Lindsay in Victoria. Zurii was our first Basenji by a few hours until we picked up our 2nd puppy (Mali) and David's first show dog and he was Mr personality plus and full of life, without any sign of illness or arthritis. His calling in life was to be a super thief extraordinaire and a very very very loud and frequent yodeller. He loved being groomed, brushed, patted, cuddled and loved rubbing himself in all of our visitors hair and across their necks and occasionally on their feet. He loved doing tricks on command and was even dropping and rolling over on command a couple of days before he passed. He had gone deaf but was very good at understanding sign language and was very obedient. He was taken from us very suddenly just collapsing in my arms in the kitchen one afternoon and after being on a drip for a few hours at the vets we had a phone call from the vet to come and say goodbye to our darling boy as he was struggling to breathe and was in pain, so at midnight we said goodbye to Zurii. The vet thinks he had Haemorrhagic Enteritis. He was the favorite of all of my daughters and we all miss him terribly. Goodbye darling ♥ Zurii ♥ we all miss you...xoxoxoxo |
